this is my life....
Sitting in my room listening to the loud voice of my parents yelling back and forth. The louder they get, the angrier I am. I feel the tears coming, and then it stops, with a slam of the front door and a screech of the tires on the driveway. I lay in bed wondering when my mom will be back. Eight years old, fighting and drugs are all I have seen. My journal is full of entries, writing was my escape. Morning comes, she is still not home. I cry because I’m scared. I cry because she’s not here. Dad comforts me, takes me to grandmas until he gets off work.
Home again, I’m excited because mom is back. Then the fighting begins. I sit alone on the floor in my room, writing trying to find a way out. In my mind I yell “shut up!” but they don’t listen. It is then that I promise myself that I will never be in a relationship such as the one of my parents. Yelling, fighting, drugs, and alcohol, all the reasons of the endless war between mommy and daddy. Ten years old and already, I know what I want. Someone to love me as I love them, no drugs or alcohol. Eleven years old and already half grown, I learned to ignore the yelling while doing my homework or getting lost in my writing.
Mom comes and goes and after a few days, she just stops coming. “Is it my fault?” “Where is she?” “Did I do something wrong?” These are all questions I ask myself. It is times like this that I promise myself again that I will never be like this with my family. Twelve years old and my mom is gone, only to be seen once in a while. I take care of myself while dad is at work, I stay with my grandparents, it feels like home. Brother and sister hardly come home. I am alone. Mommy and daddy are no longer together.
Thirteen and my dad is always there. He loves me and wants me happy. He notices that his little girl is already growing up, taking care of herself, strong minded, and without a mom at home. He tries his best and I love him for it. Grandma and grandpa are raising me now. I live in their house and am happy. This is my home, my safe place. Fourteen years old and my mom realizes how hurt I had been over the years. She sees me now and wonders how I made it, how I can be the way I am. I tell her, “It is because of you that I am confident, calm, and put together. You taught me how not to be. I live my life everyday with you in mind.”
Seventeen years old and mom wonders where the years went. “So grown up.” She says. Grandma and grandpa have watched me grow into the young lady that I am, they are a big part of my life. They comfort me and they know that I will do well in life. The years have flown for them. They know that I have had a hard time, I became strong… eight years old, the age I start to turn my life to the good that the world will offer. The love that I can give to my future family. The life I will have without yelling, fighting, drugs, and alcohol. I love my mom for everything she has taught me. Even though she wasn’t there, she was the reason for my childhood turning point.
